TEACHER

 

Time:   40 hours per week, 10 or 12 months per year

Responsible for: Working as part of the integrated services team with other staff and volunteers

Position Description:  The Teacher works with children individually and in small and large groups as part of the cooperative classroom team.

The responsibilities of  a Teacher include, but are not limited to the following:

Curriculum

  • Carry out the goals, policies, and activities designed to implement CAPE, Inc. educational objectives and Head Start Performance Standards
  • Assist in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate, anti-bias curriculum, obtaining input from parents and other staff which includes aspects of all relevant Head Start components
  • In collaboration with other staff and parents, help prepare lesson plans, utilizing information from IDPs
  • Work with children in both small and large groups, assisting them in building confidence and increasing self esteem
  • Participate in home visits for Head Start children (at least twice yearly) if requested

Assessment

  • Assist in conducting developmental assessments and developing individual education plans for all children (IDP)
  • Help conduct and record periodic observations of children
  • Participate in daily evaluation sessions to review children’s progress and needs and revise and update curriculum
  • Compile and maintain a portfolio to demonstrate growth and development of skills for each enrolled child

Parent Involvement

  • Maintain effective relationships with enrolled families
  • Encourage parent involvement in all phases of the program

Nutrition

  • Work to ensure that snacks and lunches are served “family style” with an adult seated at the table with children
  • Assists with proper storage of food on daily and weekly basis

Disabilities

  • Cooperate to ensure that children with special needs are mainstreamed effectively

 

Social Services

  • Confer with Lead Teacher and Team Supervisor and other staff regarding suspected child abuse

Other/General

  • Continue career development
  • Cooperate in the maintenance and upkeep of the classroom and the site
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

Education (minimum)

  • 12 semester units* in Early Childhood Education or Child Development including at least one course in the following areas:

Child development
Child, Family and Community
Curriculum

  •  Or CDA (Child Development Associate Credential)
  • Must continue to work toward full qualifications (24 semester units of ECE and 16 units of general education) and complete within 10 years

Experience (minimum)

  • 1 year of 3+ hours per day within last 4 years working with children between 3-5 years of age
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate positively and work effectively with low-income adults and children from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds

Other Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation and valid vehicle insurance
  • Ability to work within the philosophy of the CAPE program

Desirable Qualifications

    • Familiarity with the resources of the Tri-Valley area
    • Previous experience in a Head Start or State Preschool program
    • Bi-lingual skills;  especially Spanish/English, Farsi/English
